Orthodox Union member synagogue the Woodside Jewish Center in Queens, NY has closed its doors after more than eight decades, the victim of shifting demographics. Its memory will live on, however, thanks to a generous gift of the remaining assets of the shul to the OU, to support such Israel-based programs as the Seymour J. Abrams Jerusalem World Center and NCSY’s The Jerusalem Journey summer program for public high school students. Assets are anticipated to exceed $200,000.
At a luncheon held at OU headquarters, Ralph Schloss, Woodside Jewish Center President, and Murray Steiner, Chairman of the Board, were joined by OU President Dr. Simcha Katz, Managing Director Rabbi Steven Burg, Chief Operating Officer David Frankel, Senior Director of Institutional Advancement Paul Glasser, and Frank Buchweitz, National Director of Community Services and Special Programs.
