Kensington Palace has announced that Prince William will be the first senior British royal to officially visit Israel and the Palestinian Authority. The Prince will visit Jordan on June 24 and travel to Tel Aviv the next day. After visiting Jerusalem, he will proceed to Ramallah. The visit is being made “at the request of Her Majesty’s government and has been welcomed by the Israeli, Jordanian and Palestinian authorities,” the Palace statement said.

Prince William, who is second in line to the throne, will be the first close relation of Queen Elizabeth II to make an official visit to Israel. Previous trips have been made previously by the Duke of Kent and the Duke of Gloucester, who are cousins of the Queen. Other trips, such as Prince Charles’ visit to his grandmother’s grave on the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem, were not classified as official visits.
