The Junior Common Room, a student association at Oxford University’s Somerville College, has passed a non-binding motion that effectively bans all kosher and halal meat. The ban calls on the college to serve only meat that has been stunned before being killed. This excludes kosher and halal meat, which cannot be stunned before slaughter.

“We want all our students to feel comfortable and well looked-after, including at meal-times,” a spokesman for the college said. “We are looking into expanding our provision of halal and kosher meat, and also providing more lactose-free, gluten-free and meat-free options.”

Nicole Jacobus, president of the university’s Jewish society, told the BBC that the vote harms diversity at Oxford.
