The OU mourns and pays tribute to Bernie Marcus, a”h. Bernie was an extraordinary philanthropist, visionary, and steadfast supporter of Jewish communities around the world, and especially in Atlanta. As the co-founder of Home Depot, Bernie Marcus built more than a business empire; he established a legacy of generosity that has transformed countless lives and strengthened Jewish identity across generations.
Throughout his life, Bernie embodied the Jewish value of tzedakah—charity, justice, and compassion. His philanthropic vision reached into the very heart of Jewish life, transforming communities, uplifting individuals, and empowering future generations to embrace and celebrate their heritage. From synagogues and schools to social service organizations, Bernie’s generosity is woven into the fabric of Atlanta’s Jewish community, ensuring that it remains vibrant, connected, and resilient. Like tzedakah, the value emanated locally and extended throughout the world.
Among his many passions, Bernie’s commitment to Jewish teens stood out as a testament to his belief in a strong Jewish future. NCSY, a program of the OU, has been a grateful beneficiary of his vision and support, and we are forever indebted to him for his unwavering dedication to our mission. Bernie long understood that the future of Jewish life rests in the hands of young people, and he was deeply committed to creating pathways for Jewish teens to discover and celebrate their heritage. His dedication made it possible for thousands of young Jews to connect with their roots, build lifelong friendships, and grow as leaders. Bernie was an early investor in Jewish Student Union (JSU) clubs in public high schools in the Atlanta area and helped it expand considerably on a local basis, as a precursor to its national expansion.
Through Bernie’s visionary investment in founding and funding Root One, including remarkable support for NCSY’s TJJ (The Anne Samson Jerusalem Journey) program, Jewish teens in public school have been given the life-changing opportunity to travel to Israel, often for the first time, during the summer. These trips are not just about sightseeing—they are journeys of self-discovery, connection, and pride. Bernie’s generosity empowered these teens to explore their faith, build a sense of Jewish identity, and feel the powerful connection to their homeland. For many, these trips have been transformative, igniting a lifelong commitment to Judaism and a passion to give back to their communities.
As we reflect on Bernie Marcus’s profound impact, we are reminded of the Jewish saying, “Kol Yisrael arevim zeh bazeh” — all of Israel is responsible for one another. Bernie lived this principle in every sense, ensuring that Jewish communities have the strength, resources, and unity to thrive. His vision empowered a generation of young leaders who will carry his legacy forward, infusing Jewish communities with hope, resilience, and a deep sense of belonging.
We are indebted to Bernie for his boundless generosity, his unwavering dedication, and his visionary leadership. His support has opened doors, inspired dreams, and left an indelible mark on the Jewish future. NCSY, along with the entire Jewish community, is forever grateful, and his legacy of giving will continue to inspire and sustain us all, today and for generations to come.
