Nurturing Yiddishkeit: A Philanthropist’s Dedication to Cultivating Connection

21 Nov 2024

In a world filled with uncertainty, where the needs of the Jewish community constantly evolve, there shines a beacon of hope through the generosity of individuals who choose to make a lasting impact. Meet Mr. Joseph Cohen*, a philanthropist with a heart as expansive as his vision for a better tomorrow. His decision to embrace charitable gift annuities not only reflects his commitment to giving back but also serves as a guiding light for others seeking meaningful avenues for philanthropy.

Mr. Cohen’s journey toward philanthropy is as unique as it is inspiring. Having rediscovered his roots later in life, he realized the importance of preserving and nurturing Jewish identity. “I grew up in a modern orthodox family. I wasn’t religious for several years and I’ve come back to it, and I realized that the future is really trying to get people closer to their Yiddishkeit,” he shares. This awakening inspired him to ensure that future generations have an early connection to their heritage.

Mr. Cohen’s decision to direct his giving towards the OU’s NCSY program, an OU department dedicated to nurturing Jewish identity and leadership in teenagers, is a testament to his commitment to ensuring that future generations can connect with their heritage, make friends, and attend events from an early age. Through his support, Mr. Cohen ensures that young minds have access to resources and mentorship, fostering a sense of belonging and empowerment in a high school environment where many deal with antisemitism and discrimination each day.

His choice to support the Orthodox Union (OU) stemmed from an appreciation for the organization’s multifaceted approach to community enrichment. “…the OU is involved in so many different areas and I just thought that the public-school kids are probably important. The OU has been doing a remarkable job in that area. I just thought it to be worthwhile to contribute to it,” Mr. Cohen emphasizes.

What sets Mr. Cohen apart is not just his generosity but his strategic approach to giving. He understands the importance of sustainable support, which led him to explore charitable gift annuities. “I actually have a number of charitable annuities with different organizations… But especially after October 7th, I realized it was important that we really support organizations and the work that they’re doing,” he explains.

Cohen also highlights the financial benefits of charitable gift annuities, stating, “It’s also a wonderful tax deductive and source of income, it’s stable and, for those reasons too, I encourage people to do it.” Cohen’s story exemplifies the transformative power of planned giving. Through charitable gift annuities, individuals like him can support causes close to their hearts while ensuring financial stability for themselves and their loved ones. It’s a win-win scenario that not only provides a reliable source of income but also leaves a legacy of impact.
