SpaceIL chairman Morris Kahn has announced plans for the Beresheet 2 project, posting to Facebook that “We are going to actually put a new spacecraft on the moon and we are going to complete the mission.”
In a television interview, Kahn added, “We started something and we need to finish it. We’ll put our flag on the moon.”
The announcement came less than two days after the Israeli spacecraft Beresheet crashed into the surface of the moon following a six-week journey. According to SpaceIL, “a technical glitch in one of Beresheet’s components triggered the chain of events” that culminated in the crash.
Even though the Beresheet spacecraft crashed, the fact that it reached the moon is still being touted as an achievement for the State of Israel, which is now one of only a handful of nations to have accomplished this feat.
