In 2018, more hate crimes in New York targeted Jews than all other groups combined. NYPD figures show that anti-Semitic incidents rose by 22% from last year. Of 352 hate crimes recorded, 183 were anti-Semitic incidents.
The October 27 killing of 11 in a Pittsburgh synagogue unleashed a spate of incidents in New York and “opened up people even more to act out on these feelings,” according to Evan Bernstein, Regional Director of the Anti-Defamation League New York. “I think for certain people it gave them (a) green light and that’s what is so concerning,” Bernstein said.
