Fewer than 2% of America’s population is Jewish but 41% of packaged food in America is kosher. According to the marketing firm Lubicom, there are 35 million non-Jewish consumers of kosher products and the kosher food market is projected to grow 11.6% by 2025. As the world of kosher certification grows, the public’s questions grow with it.
According to Rabbi Menachem Genack, CEO of OU Kosher, “There is no legal definition per se of kosher, so anyone can say anything is kosher.” However, “the OU has its own expertise in determining what is kosher and what is not,” as evidenced by the OU’s list of kosher specifications.
