As Director of Halacha Initiatives, Rabbi Sarna works to solve halachic challenges that face North American Jewry and support smaller organizations in their work to enhance halacha observance. He is currently involved in creating new systems, technology and partnerships that will affect various areas of halacha and his door is always open for new ideas that could benefit Mitzvah observance.
Prior to joining the OU, he served for 4 years as communal Rabbi in Dallas and subsequently for 3 years as Head of School in Houston. Originally from Montreal, Rabbi Sarna is a musmach of Yeshivas Ner Yisrael of Baltimore.
Yael Davidowitz is a passionate educator who developed the Last Kindness project in response to the alarming 50% cremation rate among American Jews. Last Kindness provides meaningful education on the beauty, value, and significance of Jewish burial and afterlife care.
Before joining NASCK full-time in 2021, Yael, a Columbia University-trained nurse, worked as an adult-geriatric nurse practitioner. She has also volunteered with her local Chevra Kadisha for nearly two decades.
Rina Hirsch is a Program Administrator at the Orthodox Union, where she plays a key role in organizing programs within the Torah and Halacha Initiatives departments, including the All Torah apps.
With over 20 years of experience in both formal and informal education, Rina brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to her role. She holds a Master’s degree in Theatre and enjoys incorporating her theatrical background into her educational approach.
Danya, originally from Milwaukee, WI, has been an administrator for the Jewish Sacred Society Chevra Kadisha of Chicago for over 20 years and an active volunteer for the last eight. Over time, her role has grown into a leadership position, where she now oversees innovative outreach initiatives, including educational programming, advertising, and increasing awareness within the broader Jewish community.
Growing up, “Chevra Kadisha” was a household term, as both of her parents were dedicated members. While she may not have fully understood the work they were doing at the time, she always recognized its immense significance. Today, she is passionate about spreading awareness of the importance of caring for the deceased with the utmost respect, in accordance with Torah values. Danya credits her mother as a source of inspiration and dedication in her commitment to this sacred mitzvah.
Beyond her work with the Chevra Kadisha, Danya is deeply involved in chesed organizations across Chicagoland, including Chai Lifeline, United Bikur Cholim, and Partners in Torah, devoting much of her time to supporting those in need. She is a devoted akeres habayis, strengthening her home and community through Torah values.
I was born and raised in Silver Spring, Maryland, where I still live with my husband of 30 years, Dean Grayson. Dean is the President of the Men’s Chevra Kadisha, and some of our five children are involved in Chevra Kadisha as well.
Before having children, I worked as a marketing manager in telecom, handling new product rollouts. But the moment I held my first daughter, I looked at my husband and said, “I’m quitting my job.” And I never looked back. While I haven’t worked for pay since then, I’ve kept busy volunteering for Bikur Cholim and Yad Yehuda, a local organization that provides food, clothing, financial assistance, and other support to those going through difficult times.
My involvement with the Chevra Kadisha started back in high school. At the time, it was a struggle to find women willing to do taharas on Erev Yom Tov, so the Chevra Kadisha came up with a solution—forming a junior league, pairing an adult leader with teenage team members. That was my unusual entry into Chevra Kadisha. I later served as treasurer for 10 years before stepping into the role of President—20 years ago.
Today, our Chevra Kadisha is well-staffed and serves the Greater Washington area, including Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, D.C., providing taharas in nine different funeral homes. One of the things I love most about this work is that you’re always learning—whether it’s understanding how another Chevra operates, navigating family customs, gaining insight and direction from poskim, or finding creative solutions when a funeral home doesn’t have what we need. And just when you think you’ve seen it all, something new comes your way!
The funds our Chevra receives are all directed to tzedakah. It’s an amazing feeling to be able to help a family afford a proper burial when they don’t have the funds or even prevent a cremation by stepping in to cover some of the costs. We also use these funds to support local charities that do so much for our community—all in the merit of the people we’ve prepared for burial.
Being part of the Chevra Kadisha is deeply meaningful. It’s a privilege to do this work, and I’m profoundly grateful for the opportunity.

I have been a member of the Chevra Kadisha of Rockland County under the leadership of Rabbi Ephraim Pessin for approximately 25 years.
I am married, blessed with five children, several grandchildren, and great grandchildren B”AH. Originally from Melbourne Australia, I moved to the United States in 1977. Soon after our arrival, we settled in Monsey, where we still reside.
I work as an office manager in my husband’s CPA firm, Bernath & Rosenberg. Since my husband is one of the firm’s founding partners, I have the flexibility to respond to Rabbi Pessin’s calls to perform a tahara at almost any time – whether in the middle of the work day, early morning or afternoon. Additionally, Rabbi Bayer, Director of the Chevra Kadisha in New Square, often calls our Chevra to do taharas for the New Square Chevra Kadisha.
I am deeply grateful to Rabbi Pessin and Rabbi Bayer for giving me the opportunity to be involved in this special mitzvah. I ask Hashem for continued good health, strength and the ability to continue doing taharas in accordance with Halacha and with the proper kavod hameis.
