Unidentified perpetrators spray-painted anti-Semitic graffiti on the walls of a museum for Elie Wiesel in Romania, where he was also born. The graffiti on the Memorial House Elie Wiesel in Sighet, eastern Romania, read “public toilet,” “Nazi Jew lying in hell with Hitler” and “Anti-Semite pedophile,” all in florescent pink paint.
Wiesel, a Nobel laureate in literature, was one of the world’s most famous Holocaust survivors before he passed away in 2016 at 87. Last year, he was honored by the residents of his hometown, who marched from the museum that was built where Wiesel was born and grew up, to the train station where he and his family boarded a train to Auschwitz in 1944.
Police are investigating the incident, which they consider an anti-Semitic hate crime, but they have no suspects in custody.
