A Holocaust survivor was the real hero at the San Diego Comic-Con. Ruth Goldschmiedova Sax, 90, who survived three Nazi concentration camps, was the main draw on a panel dedicated to “Art During the Holocaust.” Sax described to the overflow crowd how she was examined six times by Josef Mengele at Auschwitz in order to determine whether she should be sent to the gas chambers. Sax also survived internment in Theresienstadt and Oederan.
Sax also described her reaction to the anti-Semitic charicatures of Jews that appeared in the German newspaper Der Sturmer. “We were shocked and surprised by the propaganda and the way Jewish persons were portrayed,” she said. “I remember being scared, wondering how could this be? It was something we could not run away from.” Meanwhile, Jews were prominent among those in the United States creating comics showing the defeat of the Nazis.
